Cashmere - A precious and luxurious fiber with history

As early as the thirteenth century, Marco Polo has discovered representations of wild goats in caves in Mongolia, which were domesticated by humans. So it is quite plausible that these goats with the beautiful warm coat were bred by shepherds centuries ago.

Only in the 19th century this valuable wool became known in Europe under the name Cashmere. In the high plateaus of the Himalayas – in Ladakh and Tibet are the Origins of authentic Cashmere Wool.

At an altitude of 4000 meters resides the Capra Hircus, a goat domesticated today, also known as Pashmina. To survive the long winter of almost six months and the extreme temperatures of up to – 40 ° C, the animal has an extremely warm and soft coat with long fine hair.

From these goats, whose size is between the domestic house goat and the pygmy goat, originates this extraordinary wool that has made the term Cashmere famous worldwide.

Already centuries ago, Mongolian farmers used the cashmere goat’s hair to produce yurts and noble carpets. In the 16th century, the production of cashmere shawls began in the India-Pakistan border region.

Their softness soon made them a sought-after luxury item. Then, with the rapid development of world trade in the 19th century, the fine cashmere fibers began their international triumph.

Cashmere has fascinated people for thousands of years

One of the most precious and exclusive natural materials globally – was long reserved only for kings and emperors. The historical origin of Kashmir lies in Srinagar, the capital of the northern Indian province of Kashmir and Jammu.

The city is famous for traditional handicraft carpets and textile embroidery made from Cashmere yarns. But today, no one can say exactly when the industrial processing of cashmere fiber began.

History leads back to the 16th century to a Far Eastern ruler with a penchant for unusual textiles: “Muhammad Sahir Ud Din Babur,” a descendant of Timur and Genghis Khan. Under his rule, cashmere weaving developed so tremendously that at this time, 60,000 workers were employed in the northernmost province of the Indian Empire to extract and refine cashmere fiber.

The further path of cashmere leads from the Orient to the Occident. In the second half of the 17th century, a great mogul of the Indian Empire established numerous trading posts in Europe and thus brought cashmere to Europe.

Even today, cashmere products are among the most expensive and sought-after textiles. In Western countries, industrial production began only in the late 18th century. Today, the main producing countries include China, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan and Iran.

Sustainable production of cashmere is important

The cashmere goat likes to gnaw on grassroots. This promotes the grass’s ability to regenerate, but it can also destroy the grassland if too many goats graze in a given area. Therefore, it is important that Kashmiri farmers do not keep more goats than the grassland can tolerate.

Sheep and goats on a pasture in Mongolia

Due to the strong increase in demand, cashmere goats are partly no longer kept under natural conditions of extensive grazing. As a result of overuse, intensively used pastures are in danger of becoming steppe.

In intensive livestock farming, the goat’s undercoat is usually not combed out but sheared, not infrequently even before the natural change of coat. Therefore, no one needs to do without beautiful cashmere fashion. If traditional methods are used, neither animals nor pastures fall behind.

However, the price-conscious cashmere lover must be aware that inexpensive sweaters made of pure cashmere can hardly come from sustainable production. When buying, you should therefore pay attention to the quality of the cashmere products, study the manufacturer’s specifications carefully and keep your hands off suspiciously cheap offers. It is best to buy only from trusted brands.1
