Alpacas live in the Andean highlands at over 4,000 meters. The worldwide population of alpacas is estimated at 3 million, about 94 percent living in South America.

Alpacas are sheared only every two years in the summer months – this shearing is not comparable to a sheep’s shearing. A few centimetres of the Alpaca’s fur remains on the body.

The wool of one shearing is only enough for one or two alpaca sweaters or alpaca jackets. This explains the high exclusivity of alpaca wool, which is also called Inca gold in South America. No other animal provides such a wide range of colors. There are 22 natural shades between white, brown and black.

The climatic conditions in the Andes region are very extreme. During the day, it is relatively warm, with about 20°C in the sun.

But at night, it gets icy cold with up to -25°C. To endure these temperature fluctuations of almost 50°C, these animals have a particularly warm and resistant fur.

This coat is so unique because the alpacas’ hair is hollow on the inside and therefore has excellent thermoregulating properties. These outstanding characteristics make the alpaca hair the ideal fiber for the whole year – summer and winter.

Alpaca fiber is also extremely dirt and odor resistant. This means a minimum of care. Airing in the morning dew’s fresh air is the best and the cheapest cleaning. Therefore, alpaca clothing is also extremely durable.
